Apex Legends has reached 50 million players
#1
Apex Legends has passed another milestone in its meteoric first month. Respawn Entertainment announced on Twitter that the game has reached 50 million players — a huge feat, considering the free-to-play battle royale game launched just four weeks ago. Since its surprise launch in February, Apex Legends has grown at a massive rate. Within its first eight hours, the game had one million players; by the end of its first day, 2.5 million people had jumped in.

While not specified, this 50 million player number is likely referring to anyone who has ever downloaded and played the game on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, regardless of if it was one match or 100. In a brief video included with the announcement, developer Respawn Entertainment also revealed that over the last month, 158 million finishers have been used, 1.23 billion ultimates have been activated, 31 billion pings have been placed, there have been 170 million respawns, and more.

The game hasn't been without issues, including crashes, hitbox discrepancies and cheaters. However, its early success is no mean feat, particularly when Respawn has yet to kick off the season pass or introduce much more content than a new weapon and seasonal cosmetics. Fortnite had over 200 million players as of this fall, but it also had much more time to get to that point and includes mobile users. Apex's tally is based on gamers using 'just' three platforms: PS4, Xbox One and Windows PCs. By the way, you can buy cheap Apex Coins from mmocs.com, where you can enjoy a 3% discount by using the code “ MMOCSVIP ”.

Apex Legends has also been a force on Twitch right from the get-go, in part due to concerted efforts to brand the game as an esports-friendly title. At the time of writing it's settled on 105k viewers, with Fortnite just above at 106k, although recently it seems to have slipped back into second place in the Twitch rankings. Still, not bad at all.

Apex Legends uses the same free-to-play business model as many other games, offering its initial download for no cost but also using optional in-game purchases to drive revenue. Such a business model has paid enormous dividends for Epic Games' Fortnite, which generated $2.4 billion in 2018.

Apex Legends’ audience growth has already reached 50 million players within the span of a month. It took Fortnite four months to reach 45 million players. While some of this growth difference is obviously the result of the proliferation of the battle-royale genre among a mainstream audience since Fortnite Battle Royale’s release, it still shows that Respawn’s stab at battle royale has cemented its place in the field.
